IIridion 3D/I is reminiscent of arcade shooters such as IGalaga/I or IGradius/I, except that IIridion/I is done in over-the-shoulder third-person 3-D. The problem is that this perspective really, really hurts the gameplay. One can only wonder how much better IIridion 3D/I might have been had the developers chosen a more workable point of view. p Your ship sometimes blocks your sightline as you shoot, and it's extremely difficult to accurately gauge distance and depth perception. Is that a small enemy that's close to my ship (maybe even about to collide with it), or is it a large one that's farther away? Are they shooting at me or are those "shots" actually distant ships? Are those enemies or part of the tunnel scenery? Another problem is the jerky control. If you're flying through a tunnel trying to kill the bad guys, you should be able to literally fly in circles. With the Game Boy Advance directional pad, squares are about all you can manage. p At least the game is extremely pretty to look at. IIridion 3D/I boasts one of the best graphics engines available for the Game Boy Advance, and considering the competition, that's no idle compliment. Progressing through the stages and worlds one is bombarded with beautiful scenery almost as much as enemy fire. p Yes, the game looks spectacular, and it will partially appease arcade shooter fans waiting for Game Boy Advance conversions of classics such as IR-Type/I and the aforementioned coin-ops. It's just too important to see what you're doing in a game of this type to recommend the title to anyone but the most hard-core fans of the genre. I--Andrew S. Before Jimmy can do that, however, he must find all the parts of a spaceship so he can embark on his quest. At his disposal are a wide variety of gadgets, including lasers, goo guns, jetpacks, rockets, and grappling guns. The game features 24 levels that take place in locations such as Retroville, a meteor field, and the Yokian Empire. Perhaps the strongest part of the game is its multiplayer mode, which supports up to four players via link cable. In this mode, players compete to collect the most coins while slowing the opposition with goo darts. p The single-player game incorporates basic platform elements. Players spend most of the time running, jumping, and collecting objects. It's hardly innovative, but it works for a younger audience. The four racing levels also add some variety. Extremely young gamers may need an adult handy to deal with the game's heavy text and poor save system; the latter uses long passwords to track a player's progress. All in all, this is a good game for fans of the series. It features strong graphics and plenty of the film's flavor. Adept players will breeze through the single-player game, although the multiplayer mode provides a fair amount of replay value. I--Raymond M.
