When Sega decided to discontinue the Dreamcast, it opted to make its excellent sports titles available for other consoles. And not a moment too soon. Competition is always a good thing, and Sega Sports titles, including INBA 2K2/I, are some of the best in the business. p INBA 2K2/I features all the teams, rosters, and, most importantly, rule changes (like the now-legal zone defense) found in the real NBA. Player faces have been mapped to realistic body types (complete with tattoos), so you can identify a big man like Shaq and a speedster like Iverson without looking at their numbers. The game takes full advantage of the graphics-rendering power of advanced consoles by including better texturing, lighting effects, and facial animations, along with a higher polygon count, to ensure all the jukes, spins, jumps, and dunks are as realistic as possible. The audio is also good, particularly the play-by-play, which is accurate and speedy. p The controls are intuitive--even for people used to the Dreamcast--especially in the area of on-the-fly play calling. The controls let you quickly and fluidly box out your opponent, spin, shoot, pass, fake, and dunk. p There are also eight street-ball courts, and this addition makes for an almost entirely new game. In this respect, it is the equal of the NBA Live series from EA Sports. But INBA 2K2/I surpasses EA's titles with its excellent AI. This game is challenging, satisfying, and fun in both single and multiplayer modes. The keys to a successful basketball video game are its controls, artificial intelligence, and pacing. INBA Courtside 2002/I excels in all three areas, with only a few problems. One is the defensive AI, which often leaves itself open to dunks and fast breaks, and is generally a slouch when it comes to rebounds. This can be remedied with the higher difficulty levels, but that makes the computer a flawless shooter, even from behind the line. p The controls are good, but take some getting used to if you've spent a lot of time with other basketball simulations. Players use the C stick on the controller to pass the ball. No button pressing is necessary; just point the stick at the desired player and the ball is away. Unfortunately, this same system is used to select defensive players, and that can be difficult, especially if the action is moving fast and furious. The game does feature quite a few game modes: practice, exhibition, season, and even an interesting mode that takes place on top of the roof. p As you might expect, the player models are smooth, crisp, and photorealistic. The animations are detailed with nary a slowdown or glitch. Even the crowd looks good, and benched players are likewise in full 3-D. The audio isn't so impressive, however. Never have I heard such uninspired and slow commentary--it often seems to be describing plays from another game, or worse, talks about plays that happened 30 seconds prior to the current action. Not a game breaker, but definitely not as good as the competition. p INBA Courtside 2002/I, aside from the minor flaws described above, is still a stellar entry in the basketball fold and an asset for the Nintendo GameCube library. NHL 06 includes everything from NHL 05, including the revamped shooting controls. New to the 2006 version is the use of the left analog stick for deking, which in hockey terms means to dodge and fake out defenders. The right analog stick is used to pull off fancy moves like a spin or between the legs pass. These fancy moves will distract goalkeepers, giving the gamer an opening to shoot. The drawback to these moves is that only superstar characters can pull them off regularly. The game includes many of the traditional hockey game modes, including dynasty mode. In dynasty mode, gamers will control their own hockey team and have to deal with outside pressures, sponsors, and more while trying to meet the team philosophy, which is different for each team.
