The Madden series is by far the most popular NFL console-game franchise in North America. It is the game of choice among many active and former NFL players, and has been a mainstay on most gaming platforms for close to a decade. And this year's version for the PlayStation, IMadden NFL 2001/I, is amazing--it's even better than the incredible Nintendo 64 version of the same name.p In terms of playability, EA Sports has added some nice new features. Players are rewarded with collectable in-game Madden Cards by performing certain tasks, which can be used to unlock secret game codes, players, stadiums, and legendary NFL teams. Also, you can trade those cards with friends using the PlayStation memory card. Enhancing the replayability of IMadden NFL 2001/I is a new two-minute drill feature that allows up to 10 players to compete for the highest score.p The game does have a couple of trouble areas. The CPU play isn't all that synched with the gameplay, resulting in some very strange calls and plays. John Madden's commentary is stocked with only a few phrases, which are used ad nauseam. While not perfect, the sound effects and crowd noises are still preferable to the whiny blips of the N64 version. The basic game play is simple enough. You drop colored marbles into your choice of 8 columns. Match 3 colors horizontally and those marbles (and others of the same color that are connected) blow up and make space for more. Sounds too simple uh? At the bottom of the colums are 4 teeter-totters. Each marble has a weight. As you add marbles to one column you can cause the other column on that teeter-totter to ascend and eject it's top marble sending it flying across the board to land in another column. At the start of the game there are only a few colors of marbles. As you finish levels different colored marbles start appearing making it harder and harder to make matchups. Some video games the masses can enjoy, and some video games cater to the hard-core fanatic of a specific genre. Flight sims are a good example, as are most golf games. What many don't realize, though, is that even a genre as innocuous as the simple platform shooter has a hard-core fan base - a league of players that can run faster, shoot longer, and generally destroy any side scroller in one sitting. These blister-thumbed few need something better, faster, harder. Mega Man X4 was created for them.
First, you must be a fan of the motif to even understand this game. By motif, I'm talking about anime and all the Speed Racer-esque backgrounds, bizarre character names, and recycled sound effects that go along with it. In addition to the game's general aesthetics, all the cinematic scenes are 100 percent anime, right down to the shamefully bad voice acting. The first scene introduces you, by means of a frantic music video, to all the games major characters. From there, you are thrust into the action of the game's first two-stage level that serves as a teaser to the rest of the story.
Through much in-game exposition, we learn that General and Colonel (great names!), under instruction from the evil Sigma, have incited Repliforce, an army of reploids formerly allied with our heroes, the Maverick Hunters, to riot. Following Sigma's plans to destroy the human race that created them, they have demolished a Maverick Hunter base and promise to continue the destruction until their final weapon is complete, and the earth is vaporized, or something like that. It is, of course, up to Mega Man X and his faithful partner, Zero, to foil their plans and save the earth from destruction. | *$5.98 |

Mega Man's exploits have been taking place on a variety of different platforms for more than a decade, but recent attempts to bring old Mega Man into 3-D have largely been missteps. That's why we were chomping at the bit to play IMega Man X5/I, because it marks a long-overdue return to MM's 2-D roots. p Unfortunately, the game plays more like a rushed overcorrection than a nostalgic, side-scrolling romp. For example, you can now choose between three playable characters: Zero, X, and Fourth. It's a good idea, but the problem is that the characters are so different that this option actually destroys the fluidity of the gaming experience. In the original IMega Man X/I titles, you couldn't progress until you found a weapon that could be used to destroy a particular boss. In IX5/I, bosses can be put out of their misery with the Z-Saber and the X-Buster. p But the game's biggest problem is its difficulty. The first law of game design is that a game should provide gradual, continual challenge. IX5/I just keeps getting easier and easier due to the endless number of checkpoints and unlimited continues. The result is IMega Man/I with training wheels. p By IMega Man/I standards, this game is truly a disappointment. On the bright side, if you are new to the gaming scene and are looking for a simple game that will help you improve your skills, this game might be your cup of tea. For most gamers, though, IX5/I is way too easy! Mega Man X6 begins shortly after the previous game. The space colony has crashed into the planet, and Zero--the plasma-sword-equipped crimson hero of the Mega Man X series--has just been destroyed. Sifting through the debris is a scientist named Gate, who stumbles upon a special piece of technology at the site and then retreats to his lab. Moments later, the scientist is shown in his laboratory conducting experiments when all of a sudden, he goes mad and begins talking about creating a perfect world for reploids. Mavericks--the animal-like robot enemies found in previous games--start appearing around the world, causing Mega Man to take action and find out what's going on. With the exception of the explanation of various gameplay mechanics, Mega Man's narrative is largely irrelevant and uninteresting.
